Devotions > Elijah a Man of Faith

Apparently when God instructed Elijah to find and meet with Ahab again he did not hesitate.

‘Now it happened after many days that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, "Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the face of the earth."

When they met Elijah instructed the King to assemble all of Israel on Mount Carmel. There seems to be a total lack of fear in the heart of Elijah during this meeting.

“When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, "Is this you, you troubler of Israel?"
18  He said, "I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's house have, because you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and you have followed the Baals.
19  "Now then send and gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, together with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table."

One instructive element of this Mount Carmel challenge is that the competition was not between Elijah and the prophets of Baal; but rather it was between Baal and the Lord.   God directed Elijah such that he was able to position himself out of the limelight and focus the spotlight on God.  Notice that Elijah did not try to shame the people for walking away from God.  He did not even remind them of the amazing miracles that God had performed for His people in the past. Not that these methods are bad.  But in this case God directed Elijah to simply set up a competition between God and Baal and let God demonstrate His fantastic power.

"Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by fire, He is God." And all the people said, "That is a good idea."

Notice the immediate buy in by the people, the same folks that were actively worshiping both Baal and God together.   These people were perhaps much like some of us.   They wanted to curry favor with the king thus they worshipped Baal.  But they also wanted to look good in the eyes of the priests, so they also worshipped the Lord. God is intolerant of dual worship.  It is an abomination to Him.  However today many want to fit into  this culture and thus worship the things of this world.   But we also seek the blessings of God so we worship Him.   It is sometimes six days to worship the ways of this world and one day to worship the Lord.   God was making it clear through Elijah that he will not bless a people who are halting between two opinions.   James said much later that “the double minded man is unstable in all of his ways.  Let not that man think he will receive anything from the Lord.”

Elijah gave the advantage to the prophets of Baal.   He asked them to go first.  He gave them from early morning until the time of the evening sacrifice but no fire came under the sacrifice of the prophets of Baal.   Then:

“At the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet came near and said, "O LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, today let it be known that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and I have done all these things at Your word.
37  ‘Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that You, O LORD, are God, and that You have turned their heart back again.’
38  Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.”

After Elijah killed all to the prophets of Baal (in accordance with the law of Moses), he returned to the top of Mount Carmel and humbled himself before the Lord and began to pray for rain.   It is interesting that when He prayed for fire God seemed to answer immediately, but when he prayed for water he was required to pray for some time.  God has His purposes even in how and when He answers prayer.  Even though God had promised water, Elijah was required to ask for it.  And ask for it he did with humble submitted persistence.

And Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.

For this entire span of three and one half years Elijah had many opportunities to move from faith into fear, for example, when the brook dried up or when the widow’s son died, or when God instructed him to seek out Ahab after more than three years of severe drought.    But Elijah did not worry about what he would eat, or what he would wear, or  where he would live or who he must encounter.  His focus was on listening to God and obeying His commands.

If we are to experience personal revival, which is critical for national revival, we must hear and obey these words:

31  "Do not worry then, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear for clothing?'
32  "For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
33  "But seek first His
